Making sense of angles

Why memorize when you can understand? Give significance to “boring” technical techniques for measuring angles.

Background

Age group: Grade 6

Pedagogical purpose: Understand, derive, and calculate angles on a straight line, at a point, and at vertically opposite angles.

Pedagogical challenge: We had to create a wrong answer sequence that would provide a strong conceptual understanding. We used visualization to show the logic behind theoretical techniques normally taught in school.

Story: Silly robot fell and lost his head while following his heart. Help him find his way back to the top floor!

Game task: Calculate the angle degrees by which the robot should turn.

Game challenge: We worked with kids to understand the most intuitive way to explain this topic visually without adding any text. We also had to find working solutions for doing this despite our limited production capacity—and managed to do so in a way that makes us proud!
