Engaging creativity and puzzle solving

Be free to create while learning! A playful environment for introducing the concept of rotational symmetry.

Background

Age group: Grade 5

Pedagogical purpose: Learn about rotational symmetry and the order of such symmetry, beginning with pattern intuition and continuing to full definition. Become familiar with the terms while creating rotational symmetric patterns.

Pedagogical challenge: We wanted to present a complex concept from extracurricular material while making sure it would be self-explanatory and require no additional teacher assistance.

Story: Coolie invites you to express your creativity and color mandalas together with her!

Game task: Color the mandalas following rotational symmetry patterns. As long as there is rotational symmetry, you can do whatever you want!

Game challenge: It was challenging for us to organize the game sequence in terms of freedom vs. pedagogical requirements and still maintain freedom of expression. It also took us time to find the right visual solutions for sharing the pedagogical material.
