UX/UI solutions for unusual pedagogical requirements

How can you fit a two-hundred-floor building in one screen? Create an intuitive UX/UI solution to help kids navigate a large-scale number line.

Background

Age group: Grades 4-5

Pedagogical purpose: An elementary exploration of addition and subtraction using negative numbers and teaching kids how to apply them in real-life scenarios. (In this game, positive and negative numbers represent ordinal numbers.)

Pedagogical challenge: Find a metaphor that can best help kids understand the (sometimes confusing!) relationship between negative and positive numbers.

Story: The elevator is out-of-service but the show must go on! Help the bellboy deliver room service to the guests despite this inconvenience.

Game task: Oops! The bellboy doesn’t know how to count negative numbers. Help him figure out what floor he needs to get to.

Game challenge: In addition to the usual game development challenges, we also needed to find an easy UI solution for scrolling up and down 200 floors.

Are you crazy enough to run 200 floors?
