Collaborating for better storytelling

Why work alone when you can work together? The sky is the limit when you co-create.

Background

Age group: Grade 5

Pedagogical purpose: Expand conceptualization of whole/decimal addition by applying it to fractions. See how fractions are built up from unit fractions and learn how to add fractions with the same denominator.

Pedagogical challenge: We want to help kids understand the concept of fractions as a number—or part of a whole—prior to them using fractions in addition.

Story: A gang of mice is terrorizing the cheese shops in town—but they’re having a hard time understanding amounts in fractions!

Game task: Help the mice calculate how much cheese they stole.

Game challenge: We used a rebellious storyline in order to relay the mathematical challenge in a fun way! Our budget limitations forced us to be super-creative and minimalistic in our storytelling.

How tasty a cheese fraction could be?
